Now out: Beneath the Handkerchief and Other Tales by Memduh Şevket Esendal

Memduh Şevket Esendal’s (1883–1952) Beneath the Handkerchief is the first English-language collection of stories by one of the formative figures of the modern Turkish short story. Often described as Chekhovian, Esendal brings into view a world of civil servants, shopkeepers, villagers, and minor bureaucrats navigating the quiet upheavals of everyday life in a society in transition. Translated by Etkin Hanson, this collection of twenty-five stories introduces English-language readers to a writer whose humor and subtle social observation secured him a lasting place in Turkish literature. Available to order via Amazon and Bookshop.org.
