Selected Works by Sabahattin Ali
Sabahattin Ali’s (1907-1948) Kürk Mantolu Madonna (“Madonna in a Fur Coat“) is one of the most popular Turkish novels of all time and may be the most popular translated Turkish novel as well. However, few of Ali’s other works have been translated into English. We are working on bringing to you more from the celebrated author, who, although he died so young at the age of 41, left an indelible mark on Turkish literature. Our translation of his collected poetry books, along with Esirler (“Captives”), his only play, will be published in a single volume in 2026.
Collected Stories by Memduh Şevket Esendal
Memduh Şevket Esendal’s (1883–1952) Collected Stories is the first English-language collection of stories by one of the formative figures of the modern Turkish short story. Often described as Chekhovian for his attention to the ordinary and his distrust of the dramatic, Esendal brings into view a world of civil servants, shopkeepers, villagers, and minor bureaucrats navigating the quiet upheavals of everyday life in a society in transition. Translated by Etkin Kubalı, this collection of twenty-five stories introduces English-language readers to a writer whose humor, restraint, and subtle social observation secured him a lasting place in Turkish literature.
The Wedding Night: Lovemaking of a Eunuch
First published in 1913 under the initials M.S., The Wedding Night: Lovemaking of a Eunuch is a late Ottoman novella tentatively attributed to M. Turhan Tan (aka M. Samih Fethi), who would go on to become a bestselling historical novelist in the 1930s. Tan in his early years used the pseudonym M.S. The novella opens onto a rarely seen world, following Amber Agha, a former imperial eunuch, as he seeks a life beyond captivity and the harem walls, driven by the desire to marry and claim an ordinary life in his free years. It also offers a striking portrait of early twentieth-century Istanbul, laying bare the social life, racialized fantasies, and anxieties surrounding eunuchs in the wake of Abdülhamid II’s deposition in 1909 and the dispersal of the imperial harem. Translated by Burcu Karahan, this unusual and revelatory work will be published in 2026 as a bilingual Turkish-English edition.
